Most fishing holidays in the UK ask you to choose. You either get the water you want and put up with a tired caravan, or you get somewhere comfortable to sleep and spend two hours a day driving to anything worth casting at. I have never understood why those two things are supposed to be incompatible, and on the Leicestershire and Northamptonshire border they are not. What makes this corner of England unusual is the mix. Plenty of regions give you carp. Plenty give you trout. Very few give you a stocked reservoir, a specimen carp lake, a friendly day-ticket coarse fishery and miles of free canal within the same half-hour radius, which means a group of anglers with completely different tastes can all fish what they actually enjoy and still be back at the same kitchen table by seven.

Why the East Midlands suits a fishing holiday

Market Harborough sits in farming country crossed by the River Welland and the Grand Union Canal, so water is genuinely never far away. Drive twenty minutes in any direction and you pass gravel-pit lakes, estate ponds and canal bridges with a car pulled onto the verge and a rod poking out of the hedge. It is not a famous fishing destination in the way Rutland or Norfolk are, and that is precisely the appeal. The waters are quieter, the day tickets are cheaper, and you are not booking a peg six weeks out.

The road position helps more than people expect. We are about 15 minutes from the A14, M1 and M6, which means guests come from Birmingham in an hour, London in under two, and Manchester in a little over two. Additionally, the train from London St Pancras reaches Market Harborough in under an hour, so one of your group can arrive by rail and be collected at the station rather than everyone convoying down.

The other thing worth saying honestly is that the countryside here carries a non-fishing partner well. Several of my guests book because one half of the couple wants three days on the bank and the other wants walks, a market town and somewhere decent for lunch. One correction worth making, because outdated guides still get this wrong. Eyebrook Reservoir was famous for years as a trout fishery and has moved away from game fishing, running now as a mixed coarse and predator water. If you have specifically come for stocked trout, go to Pitsford, or look further afield to Rutland and Grafham. I would rather tell you that now than have you drive there with a fly rod.

Pitsford in a bit more detail

Pitsford is the one I recommend most often, and not only for the fishing. It is a large Anglian Water reservoir with clean, weed-fringed margins that fish well from spring through autumn, and it has a nature reserve along the northern arm with grebes and ospreys passing on migration. If half your party does not fish, they can spend the day walking the reserve while you are out on the water, and everyone meets at the cafe. Rod licences, seasons and what it actually costs

This is the part that catches visiting anglers out, so it is worth being precise. A rod licence and a day ticket are two separate things. The licence is national and comes from the Environment Agency. The day ticket is what the fishery charges you for the peg. You need both on most waters, and you need the licence even on the free stretches of canal.

Buy the licence online the night before you travel rather than trying to sort it on the morning. If you plan to fish more than once across your stay, the eight-day version at £12 is far better value than two singles, and it removes the temptation to chance a session without one. Choosing a base, and what actually matters

Having hosted a good number of fishing parties, I have a fairly clear view of what makes the difference between a stay that works and one that does not. It is rarely the things the listing photos show.

• Somewhere to put wet kit. Waders, landing nets and a bag of damp bait need a home that is not the kitchen. Ask before you book.
• A proper kitchen. Anglers keep odd hours, and the ability to cook a real breakfast at half five and a real dinner at nine matters more than a restaurant booking you will miss.
• Parking you can load at. Reversing a car up to the door in the dark with a barrow of gear is a small thing that becomes a large thing at 5am.
• Beds that suit a mixed party. Friends fishing together rarely want to share a double, so bedrooms that split into twins are worth looking for.
• Something for the non-anglers. If the other half of your group is bored by day two, you will not be invited back.

The Barn was not built as a fishing lodge and I would not pretend otherwise. It was built as a luxury eco barn conversion for families and friends, and it happens to suit anglers unusually well. There are three superking double bedrooms, one of which converts into two twins, plus a double sofabed, so eight of you fit without anyone drawing the short straw. The kitchen, dining and living space is one massive open-plan room with a 10 metre glass wall onto the private garden, which means the people who stayed behind and the people who have just walked in muddy are still in the same room. There is an outdoor kitchen with a gas BBQ and eight-seat dining, free parking at the door, and underfloor heating that dries boots overnight without anyone asking.

I should be straight with you about one thing, because I would rather you heard it from me than felt misled on arrival. The Barn does not have fishing on its own doorstep. The 14 Acres estate has a private lake, and The Loft looks out over it, but it is not a stocked fishery and it is not what you are coming for. What The Barn gives you is a genuinely comfortable base with every water on this list inside a half-hour drive, which for a multi-day holiday is the thing that actually matters.

Planning a trip for a mixed group

Next, the logistics. The mistake most groups make is treating a fishing holiday like a fishing session that happens to last four days. Give yourself a relaxed schedule instead. Half the pleasure is not rushing, which is far easier when the bank is fifteen minutes away rather than two hours.

• New to fishing, or bringing children? Start on the Grand Union Canal or somewhere friendly like Brook Meadow. Bites come quickly and nobody goes home disappointed.
• Chasing a proper carp? Waterloo Farm and Rushton give you genuine specimen fish alongside plenty of silvers, so there is action whatever the weather does.
• Fly fishers and improvers? Pitsford, with the sporting ticket if you prefer catch and release, and a boat if you want to cover more water.
• Mixed groups? Pick a water with space and decent parking so anglers and non-anglers can spread out, then meet back at the house for the evening.
• Bigger party than eight? The whole 14 Acres estate takes up to 19 across three properties, which suits a club trip or two families travelling together.

Finally, feed yourselves properly. There is an excellent local farm shop that guests come back raving about, with a first-class butcher, fresh veg and a decent wine selection. A group that cooks together at the end of a day on the bank has a better holiday than a group that queues for a table.
