Burghley House: History, Gardens and Where to Stay

Burghley House is one of the grandest Elizabethan houses in England, a short drive from The Barn and well worth setting aside a full day for. It sits just outside Stamford in Lincolnshire, roughly 40 minutes from Clipston, and it has been in the same family, the Cecils, for more than 400 years.

This guide covers what to see, when to visit, and how to plan a day that combines the house, the gardens, and a proper lunch in Stamford. I have been many times and every visit turns up something new.

The State Rooms

The State Rooms are the heart of any visit to Burghley. Eighteen rooms are open to the public and they are packed with tapestries, ceiling paintings by Antonio Verrio, and one of the finest collections of Italian Old Master paintings in private hands. The Heaven Room and the Hell Staircase are the rooms people remember. They are covered floor to ceiling in dramatic Baroque painted scenes.

For 2026 the State Rooms are open daily except Fridays from 14 March. Allow at least 90 minutes to do them justice. Audio guides are included and they add a lot. Photography is welcome but flashes are not.

Note that the house closes during the Defender Burghley Horse Trials on 3 to 6 September 2026, so plan around those dates if you want to see the inside.

Capability Brown Parkland

The 2,000-acre park surrounding Burghley is the largest surviving example of Lancelot Capability Brown’s work in the country. Brown landscaped it in the 1750s and 60s and the setting he created, with the great lake, the deer park, and the stone bridges, is a masterpiece in itself. You can walk for hours and not retrace your steps.

Red and fallow deer have roamed the park for centuries and you will usually see herds as you walk. Keep a respectful distance, especially during the autumn rut.

The Sculpture Garden

The Sculpture Garden occupies Capability Brown’s lost gardens, restored and reopened as an open-air gallery. Sweeping wildflower borders and naturalistic planting sit alongside striking contemporary sculpture from a changing roster of artists. The meandering paths lead you down to the great lake with wide views across the water.

It is free with Gardens admission and is one of the most peaceful corners of the whole estate. Bring a notebook or a camera and take your time.

The Garden of Surprises

The Garden of Surprises is the part children love. It is a Jacobean-style water garden with hidden jets, a moss house, a grotto, and mirrors set into the walls. Expect to get slightly wet if the weather is warm. The theme is classical civilisation, astrology, and astronomy, and it rewards a slow wander.

Adventure Play and Family Days

Alongside the Garden of Surprises is a large adventure playground that will absorb children for at least a couple of hours. Combined with the Sculpture Garden and the deer park, it makes Burghley a genuine full-day family visit rather than just a house tour.

The Gardens and Adventure Play open for February Half Term and then weekends only until daily opening resumes on 14 March. Final main-season day is 1 November 2026, with selected additional weekends in November.

Lunch in Stamford

Stamford is a 10-minute drive from Burghley and one of the prettiest towns in the country. Built in golden limestone with medieval streets and six medieval churches, it is worth an hour or two in its own right. The George of Stamford, a former coaching inn, is the classic lunch spot and does a fabulous roast. For something lighter, Paten & Co and The Tobie Norris are both well loved.

If you want to pair the visit with shopping, Stamford has an excellent mix of independent bookshops, galleries, and food shops. It is the kind of town you wish were closer to home.

Driving and Parking

Burghley is a straightforward drive from The Barn. Head north on the A508, join the A43 at Kettering, then pick up the A47 and the A1. It is about 40 minutes in good traffic. Parking on the estate is free and plentiful.

If you are driving electric there is charging available in Stamford town centre. The Barn has its own EV charger on site so you can set off with a full battery.
